In the classic Star Trek episode titled “Arena”, Captain Kirk was captured by the Metrons and forced into a battle to the death with the captain of the reptilian Gorn species. Kirk won the battle with the Gorn, but refused to kill him. A Metron appeared to Kirk, congratulating him on not only winning the battle but showing the advanced trait of mercy for one’s enemies.
